Shared attention is stronger than constant contact
Return to topics, remember small details and share activities that do not require personal exposure: discuss a film, compare recipes or learn a skill. Consistency matters more than the number of messages in one intense week.
Leave room for separate lives. A person does not owe immediate replies, daily video or account access to prove friendship. Pressure disguised as closeness weakens trust.
- Follow up on something previously shared.
- Keep promises small and realistic.
- Accept delayed replies without punishment.
- Notice whether boundaries remain respected over time.
Keep risk separate
Care and money should not become the same test
Do not send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency or financial access because a story is emotional. An online friend should not need your verification code, bank account or identity document. The FTC warns that money requests from a new online friend are a strong scam sign.
Verify important claims outside the person’s own messages. Talk to someone you trust. A reverse image search can reveal a reused photograph but cannot prove a clean image is genuine.

Offline contact is a new decision
Moving to another app shares another identifier. Meeting in person adds physical risk. Neither step is required to validate the online connection. Ask what purpose the change serves and what information it exposes.
If you decide to meet, use a public place, independent transport and a trusted check-in. One respectful meeting does not remove the need for boundaries.
- Stay on platform
- Keeps contact within the available product controls.
- Move apps
- May expose a phone number, profile history or social graph.
- Meet offline
- Requires a public plan, independent exit and trusted check-in.
