Fraud awareness · action guide

A new online friend should not need your money.

Scams often build trust first, then introduce urgency, secrecy or a payment method that is hard to reverse.

SHORT ANSWER

Do not send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, bank access or verification codes to a person you just met online. Slow down, verify independently, cut contact and report suspected fraud.

A single awkward message is not proof of fraud. A request for money or account access is enough reason to stop.

The pattern

Trust, obstacle, urgency, payment

A scammer may present a detailed identity, communicate consistently and avoid an immediate request. Later comes an obstacle: travel, medical trouble, a frozen account, an investment opportunity or a package fee. The story creates urgency and asks you to keep the situation private.

The payment method is often difficult to recover: gift card numbers, wire transfer, cryptocurrency or a payment sent to a different name. Another version asks you to receive or forward money, which can make you part of a money-mule scheme.

  • A crisis appears just before a meeting or visit.
  • The person cannot use ordinary payment or support channels.
  • You are told to hide the request from friends or a bank.
  • A code, remote-access tool or screen share is required.

Links and codes

A small request can open a large account

A verification code can reset an account or approve a sign-in. A link can imitate a login page, payment service or delivery company. Do not use a link because a new contact says it proves identity, age or eligibility.

Open the known official website yourself. Check the domain and contact the company through a number or address you found independently. A legitimate support agent does not need your password or one-time code.

  1. 1
    Stop responding

Urgency works by keeping you inside the story.

  2. 2
    Verify outside the chat

Use an official site or a trusted person, not contact details supplied in the message.

  3. 3
    Protect the account

Change exposed credentials and contact the payment provider quickly.

Emotional pressure

Kindness does not require financial risk

A genuine connection can survive a reasonable boundary. Someone who becomes angry, threatens to disappear or claims that payment proves care is using the relationship as leverage.

Talk to a friend or family member who is outside the conversation. A reverse image search may reveal a reused profile photograph, but a clean result does not prove the identity is genuine. Report the account and the fraud to the relevant platform and public authority.
